Backrooms Lore Explained: Why It Sucks To Be Lost in Level 0–2
In the fan-written Backrooms, surviving Levels 0 to 2 means beating thirst, exhaustion and the dark: Level 0, "The Lobby", has no entities but no food or clean water either, Level 1's parking garage gives you almond water along with False Puddles and blackouts, and Level 2, "Pipe Dreams", adds disease and Smilers. There's no confirmed way home, and the cruellest trap is a fake bedroom that copies your own.

The 9 reasons it sucks to be lost in the Backrooms
- Nobody is coming. Noclipping out of the Frontrooms only goes one way, and nobody saw you leave.
- The yellow never ends. Level 0's rooms never repeat, its lights cause migraines and hallucinations, and meeting another person there is thought impossible.
- Nothing hunts you. Time does. Level 0 has no entities, so you die of thirst, exhaustion or hunger instead; the calm Manila Room may carry you to Level 1 or 2.
- Your water is your wallet. Almond water keeps you alive and some groups use it as money, but once it goes off it can poison you.
- The garage bites back. On Level 1, False Puddles hide pits of teeth, and blackouts let Hounds, Clumps and Skin-Stealers hunt.
- The pipes make you sick. Level 2's pipes breed rust, bacteria and unknown diseases, and most epidemics in the Backrooms start there.
- Something smiles in the dark. Smilers are apex predators of the dark, and the Biological Pipeline only digests you if you stop moving.
- You wake up at home. False Frontrooms Awakenings copies your home from memory, gets it wrong, and resets when you try to leave.
- The map keeps growing. There are hundreds of levels, written by fans together online, and no known road home.
How do you survive the Backrooms?
In the fan-written Backrooms, you survive the first three levels by finding almond water before thirst gets you, staying out of the dark, and never trusting a puddle or a bedroom. Each level kills you in a different way:
| Level | What it is | Threat | What kills you | How you’d survive |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 0, “The Lobby” | Endless yellow rooms, wet carpet, buzzing lights | Class 1: safe, no entities | Dehydration, exhaustion, starvation; slow madness | Keep walking toward Level 1, or rest in the Manila Room |
| Level 1, “Parking Zone” | A parking garage that never ends | Blackouts let entities hunt | False Puddles, Hounds, Clumps, Skin-Stealers | Drink almond water, test every puddle, stay quiet in the dark |
| Level 2, “Pipe Dreams” | Rusting utility tunnels and maintenance shafts | Class 2: unsafe | Disease, exhaustion, Smilers | Don’t touch or drink from the wrong pipe; keep moving |

How do you end up in the Backrooms?
You noclip. In a video game, noclipping is a cheat that lets you walk through walls. In the Backrooms it’s an accident, and it’s been the way in from the very beginning: the first description, posted to an anonymous message board in May 2019, warned that if you noclip out of reality in the wrong areas, this is where you end up.
Wanderers call the world you came from the Frontrooms, and noclipping from the Frontrooms only goes one way. There’s no slipping sideways into somewhere nicer. That’s reason one: nobody saw you leave, and nobody is coming.
What is Backrooms Level 0, and is it safe?
Level 0, “The Lobby”, is the first level and the first place most people land, and it’s rated Class 1: safe and devoid of entities. It’s also where most people die, slowly. The original post described it best: the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, and fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, across roughly 600 million square miles of empty rooms.
Safe doesn’t mean harmless:
- Space doesn’t behave. No two rooms are the same, and you can walk in a straight line, end up back where you started, and be in rooms you’ve never seen.
- The lights hurt. Their buzz is louder than any normal fluorescent tube and gives most people throbbing migraines that last after they leave.
- Your mind goes. Wanderers report visual and auditory hallucinations, and some slide into “utter lunacy”.
- You’re alone. Meeting another wanderer on Level 0 is thought impossible or close to it, so the person down the hall is probably a hallucination.
- There’s nothing to eat or drink. The fluid soaking the carpet isn’t safe to drink, and most deaths here are from dehydration, exhaustion or starvation.
The way out is to keep walking until the yellow halls gradually turn into Level 1’s grey concrete, or to find the Manila Room: a small room with manila-patterned walls and a dim orange light that dulls your senses so people drift in without noticing. Stay long enough and it’s reported to carry you to Level 1 or Level 2. Some hear faint whispering behind its walls. Every other exit is in our Level 0 guide.
Is almond water safe to drink?
Yes, while it’s fresh. Almond water is the most important thing in the Backrooms, but it goes off, and spoiled almond water can kill you. It tastes of almond and vanilla with a hint of rose water, eases minor illness, helps you focus and can undo some of the effects entities have on you.
You’ll find it in bottles, cans, cartons and fountains, but you’ll never see it arrive: it only appears where nobody is looking. It’s valuable enough that some groups use it as money. When it expires, mould grows inside, it smells of rotten milk and cheese, and it can be poisonous; wanderers have died from it.
What is on Backrooms Level 1?
Level 1 is a parking garage that never ends: concrete pillars, hanging fluorescent lights, stairwells, and almost no cars. There are about five cars in every 100 square kilometres, none of them work, and none have a brand or licence plate. Puddles of almond water cover the floor, and some breathe out a thick fog that never fully clears.
Here’s what makes it bite:
- False Puddles look exactly like almond water but hide a pit 1.5 to 3.6 metres deep, lined with teeth. They can’t move. They wait for someone thirsty.
- Blackouts last from minutes to days, and when your section goes dark, entities come out to hunt.
- Hounds are genetically close to humans, use simple tools, recognise faces, resent people, hear extremely well and claw at their own faces until the bone shows.
- Clumps are piles of human limbs that hide in vents and dangle one arm as bait, waiting hours, days or longer.
- Skin-Stealers are why survivors check their companions’ blood at least once a day. If it’s see-through, you have a problem.
Every creature here, and the ones further in, is in Backrooms entities explained.
What is Backrooms Level 2, “Pipe Dreams”?
Level 2 is a vast network of utility tunnels, maintenance shafts and rusting pipes, rated Class 2: unsafe. Unlike the Lobby, its space doesn’t physically shift around you, so you can try to make a map, though people still report layouts that change when they look again.
Some pipes may hold almond water, but nobody has ever found the pumps or boilers that should run them. They fill with rust, bacteria and unnamed diseases, and most epidemics in the Backrooms start here. The water you need is the water most likely to make you sick.
Your own body works against you too. Newcomers burn more energy and pump out extra adrenaline, so you arrive feeling strong and leave exhausted. Clumps, Hounds, Smilers and Skin-Stealers all live here and have adapted to the place.
What are Smilers?
Smilers are apex predators that live wherever it’s dark. They’re described as smarter than humans, have no natural predators, and records of them go back to prehistoric times. Survivors’ one piece of advice: once you see their glowing face in the dark, the choices you make next decide whether you live.
What is the Biological Pipeline?
A living pipe hidden behind pipes in Level 2’s crawlspaces, 20 to 200 kilometres long. Strangely, climbing inside is one of your better escapes from other entities, and people who do usually survive, because it only digests what stops moving for a few hours. Its fluid can dissolve an adult human in seconds, so the rule inside is simple: keep moving.
Can you ever leave the Backrooms?
No confirmed way home exists, and the cruellest trap is the one that makes you think you’ve escaped: False Frontrooms Awakenings. You lie down, close your eyes and wake up in your own bedroom. But the bed is a little too big, the room a little too small, the couch is almost where it should be, the mirror shows nobody, your phone won’t turn on, and your family has no faces.
It builds a copy of your home from your own memories and gets the details wrong. It can’t fake technology, light or reflections. If you try to walk outside, it can’t keep up and resets, and you wake in a different house. It also wears down your memory, so it gets harder to remember what home looked like. Its threat class is Undetermined, because no two people experience it the same way. One possible way in is sleeping on the floor of certain levels.
And Levels 0 to 2 are only the start. There are hundreds of levels, written by fans together online, so finding the way home could mean crossing who knows how many. Backrooms levels explained covers the rest.
Which Backrooms is this?
The fan-written one. The numbered levels, almond water, Smilers and the Frontrooms all come from the community-written Backrooms Database. Kane Pixels’ found-footage series and the A24 film Backrooms tell a separate story with no numbered levels. If you came here from the movie, start with which Backrooms is canon, and for where the whole thing began, are the Backrooms real?

Frequently asked questions
Are the Backrooms real?
No. The Backrooms are collaborative fiction that began with one photo and an anonymous post in May 2019, then grew as fans wrote levels together online, a bit like the SCP Foundation. The full origin story is in our guide to whether the Backrooms are real.
Is this video about Kane Pixels' Backrooms or the movie?
Neither. It follows the fan-written Backrooms, the version with numbered levels, almond water and entities. Kane Pixels' found-footage series (from January 2022) and the A24 film Backrooms (2026) are a separate canon with no numbered levels.
Can you meet other people on Level 0?
It's thought to be impossible, or close to it. If you see another person down a hallway on Level 0, the likeliest explanation is that you're hallucinating.
What is above the ceiling on Level 0?
A crawlspace about a metre high, full of wires and ducts. Don't climb in: the dust up there is so thick that the air can't be breathed.
Which entity is the most dangerous on Levels 0 to 2?
Smilers. They're one of the few apex predators in the Backrooms, live wherever it's dark, are described as smarter than humans and have no natural predators. Once you see a glowing face in the dark, your next choices decide whether you survive.
How many levels does the Backrooms have?
Hundreds. The fan-written Backrooms Database had 802 pages in its levels category on 17 October 2026, and the number keeps growing as fans write new ones.
What happens if you stop moving inside the Biological Pipeline?
It starts digesting you. The pipeline only digests things that stay still for a few hours, and its fluid can dissolve an adult human in seconds, so wanderers who climb in to escape other entities keep moving.
