Pavi
The show’s main character, and the first known Avatar with a permanent physical disability. Separated from her family as a small child, Pavi grew up alone in a cave in Ellora with Geet, teaching herself all four elements while dreading what that meant in a city that hates the Avatar. She’s gentle, avoids fights, collects rocks she treats as friends, and plays the kalimba. She’s also a very fast learner, able to copy another bender’s moves almost in real time.
Nisha
Pavi’s twin, found by Karthik around 396 AG with no memory of her past. She grew up hidden in plain sight as his “nonbender” assistant, training with the White Lotus in secret and watching younger cadets get to use the powers she had to hide. Where Pavi hesitates, Nisha wants to act; she sees combat as part of the Avatar’s job and names Avatar Kyoshi as the kind of Avatar she wants to be.
Jae
A disciplined, rule-following airbender who leads a Brigade squad with Daemin, Lan and Uki. He was raised to hate the Avatar, so finding Pavi bending two elements shakes him. He keeps her secret, joins the Order of the White Lotus and becomes the twins’ airbending master. He hates lying, which makes hiding the truth from his partner, Datu, hard.
Karthik
The twins’ protector. Karthik trained Jae, then secretly raised Nisha after a letter from her parents told him where to find her. He starts as the Brigade’s captain and, after the Anomaly’s attack leaves Commander Bountan incapacitated, Ellora’s council makes him commander, all while running the White Lotus underground.
Datu
A kind guard who brings snacks to Jae’s squad and is charmed by the twins, without knowing who they are. He also says he’d drive the Avatar into the Harshlands to protect the haven, which is why Jae can’t tell him the truth.
